On 23–25 April 2025, GCIP Mozambique organised an experience exchange workshop involving the municipalities of Beira and Nacala. The municipality of Dondo also participated, following an invitation extended by Beira’s cooperation partners. The opening ceremony was presided over by the President of Beira Municipality, Albano Carige. He congratulated GCIP for organising the event, which he emphasised serves as a starting point towards achieving a common goal: to better serve citizens and to promote the sustainable development of Mozambique.
The workshop brought together around 60 participants from the three municipalities as well as other areas of Mozambique, with particular emphasis on the northern Niassa Province. The three-day event also saw the participation of a wide range of non-governmental organisations and private sector companies operating in Beira, including the Chiveve River Municipal Company, GIZ, the National Association of Municipalities of Mozambique, UN-Habitat and VNG International.
These participants discussed essential pillars for the efficient functioning of municipalities, including urban planning and management, urban parks management, disaster risk management, solid waste management, and gender equality, disability and social inclusion (GEDSI).
Each municipality presented its experiences, successes and challenges across these different thematic areas. They also joined a field visit, hosted by Beira Municipality, to see these the real-world implementation of the thematic areas. The visit included infrastructure such as drainage systems, stormwater outlets, and sluice gates in the Palmeiras area of Beira; the municipal land registry; management of the Chiveve Green Park; and visits to the neighbourhoods of Goto, Macurrungo-Miquejo and Praia Nova.
At the end of the workshop, participants – mostly municipal managers and technicians, along with implementation partners – were challenged to discuss and select the experiences that best respond to the challenges and needs of their cities, and to develop an action plan for their implementation.
