- The newly launched Artificial Intelligence (AI) Accelerator serves as a central hub of UK AI expertise, connecting GCIEP with world-class capabilities.
- AI applications from the UK are already transforming infrastructure, from landslide risk mapping to cost-efficient service delivery.
- The Accelerator will identify new AI opportunities, pilot innovative solutions and strengthen collaboration across infrastructure delivery teams to present a coherent UK offer on AI.

The Green Cities, Infrastructure and Energy Programme (GCIEP) is excited to launch its first AI Accelerator, as part of GCIEP's UK Expertise Offer. The new AI Accelerator aims to harness UK AI capabilities to address complex infrastructure challenges, support evidence-based decision making and showcase the UK as a global leader in AI-driven innovation.
AI is transforming the way cities and countries plan, manage and maintain infrastructure. From optimising urban transport networks to improving energy systems and climate resilience, AI is opening new avenues for efficiency, safety and sustainability. UK organisations are at the forefront of this transformation, delivering world-class AI applications in infrastructure. Examples include the British Geological Survey, which uses machine learning to map landslide risks across 14,000 km of roads and 360 km of railways, and Birmingham City Council, whose AI tools are revolutionising service delivery and expected to save nearly £350,000 in annual operational costs.
The GCIEP AI Accelerator has been established to:
- Serve as a central hub of UK AI expertise and case studies across GCIEP sectors, drawing on the GCIEP Alliance, delivery and development partners and the wider UK supply chain.
- Provide a responsive mechanism to leverage UK AI capabilities in support of GCIEP's work in partner countries.
- Collaborate with country teams to identify AI opportunities and pilot innovative solutions that amplify GCIEP's impact and showcase UK AI capabilities.
- Strengthen alignment with other Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) technology programmes to present a coherent UK offer on AI.
To explore potential AI applications and resources, you can select 'Artifical inteligence' in the 'Sector' search box on GCIEP's News and Resources page. There you can find AI use cases across transport, water, energy, urban infrastructure and cross-cutting themes such as policy development, infrastructure planning and gender, equity, diversity and social inclusion (GEDSI).
