Empowering urban policymakers: ASEAN Sustainable Leadership in Infrastructure Programme celebrates 2024 graduates

  • The ASEAN Sustainable Leadership in Infrastructure Programme (ASLIP) celebrated the completion of a transformative course focused on sustainable infrastructure leadership.
  • The programme, as part of the Green Cities and Infrastructure Programme, covered critical topics including decarbonisation, artificial intelligence (AI) in infrastructure and leading the low carbon transition.
  • Participants from diverse sectors, including transport, energy and waste management, connected to share best practices and drive cross-sector solutions.

On 2 December 2024, 18 ASLIP graduates gathered at the British Embassy in Jakarta to celebrate the successful conclusion of their transformative learning journey to help shape the future of sustainable urban infrastructure in Southeast Asia. Delivered by the University of Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership, this comprehensive programme equips policymakers with the knowledge and skills to address pressing infrastructure challenges and embrace sustainable solutions.

Building a sustainable future through education

ASLIP 2024 featured an intensive eight-week online programme titled Business and Climate Change: Towards Net Zero Emissions. The course provided participants with a robust foundation in sustainable leadership, covering key topics such as:

  • The vision of a low carbon future
  • Decarbonisation success stories
  • Innovation and design for a low carbon 21st century
  • Leading change and coping with disruption

Participants engaged with expert trainers, explored practical case studies and gained actionable insights into accelerating the transition to resilient, climate-friendly infrastructure. The programme culminated in a three-day residential workshop, fostering in-depth discussions and collaboration among professionals from diverse sectors such as transport, waste management and energy.

Empowering cross-sector collaboration

The ASLIP 2024 graduates shared their reflections on the programme’s impact. Reach Rim, Deputy Director of the Urban Planning Division at Cambodia’s Ministry of Land Management, Urban Planning, noted:

“It's a very good opportunity to share different perspectives. I learned a lot from ASEAN colleagues and the trainers. I can really use this knowledge in my department to improve the work of local authorities and government.”

Similarly, Lusitania D.C. Lopes, Multilateral & Regional Economic Integration Policy Officer for Timor-Leste at the Asian Development Bank, highlighted the programme's broad appeal:

“It’s an incredible opportunity for networking with inspiring people from across the infrastructure landscape… There are many cross-sector opportunities here to apply to our own work.”

The course also explored the role of cutting-edge technologies in addressing urban challenges. Siti Nurwala, Senior Associate, Data Reporting & Governance at Prasarana Malaysia Berhad, shared her insights:

“The course on AI really amplified the potential of the solutions that we can contribute to with AI and resolving key challenges.”
