Building urban resillience through the Macurrungo-Miquejo community

  • Over 1,000 families took part in identifying local urban challenges and priorities to help shape the future of their neighbourhood.
  • Neighbourhood boundaries were clearly defined to support better urban planning and development.
  • Key issues in housing, infrastructure and public services were assessed to strengthen urban resilience.

The Macurrungo-Miquejo community discuss the neighbourhood.

More than 1,000 families from communal units in Macurrungo-Miquejo in Beira took part in a participatory socio-economic assessment to evaluate their neighbourhood’s current conditions. Led by the Green Cities and Infrastructure Programme (GCIP), this initiative forms part of GCIP's technical assistance to enhance the resilience of urban infrastructure in targeted areas.

The assessment was conducted with the active involvement of Beira Municipality’s technical team, community leaders, secretaries, block chiefs, neighbourhood management committees and local residents.

The assessment focused on critical aspects of daily life, including:

  • Housing and infrastructure – Quality of housing, construction materials and urban settlements.
  • Mobility and accessibility – Road conditions, transport links and pedestrian pathways.
  • Essential services – Water supply, drainage, sanitation, electricity and public lighting.
  • Community resilience – Safety concerns and the need for improved support infrastructure.

A key outcome of the process was the precise definition of neighbourhood boundaries, aiding future mapping and structured urban development.

The findings will be presented in public hearings involving residents, the Beira Municipal Council, provincial authorities, the private sector and civil society organisations. These discussions will ensure a shared understanding of the neighbourhood’s needs and support collective action towards sustainable solutions.

This initiative highlights GCIP’s commitment to participatory, evidence-based urban planning, ensuring that development efforts reflect the real needs and aspirations of the Macurrungo-Miquejo community.
