British Geological Survey

The British Geological Survey (BGS) works globally to help stakeholders make better decisions about geology and the role of geological processes in underpinning economy, environment and society. As a non-departmental public body, BGS is the UK’s premier provider of geological data, information and knowledge to help address major global challenges. Its science priorities are focused around geological mapping and modelling to support surface and subsurface planning; supporting a secure energy transition; improving water security; and better forecasting and mitigation of geological hazards.

BGS’s work helps to support UK foreign and trade policies and demonstrates how the UK is tackling global challenges. As one of eight key delivery partners under the Green Cities and Infrastructure Centre of Expertise, key priorities that can be supported by BGS technical expertise include:

  • Using geoscience data and skills to support subsurface management and planning in urban areas.
  • Understanding the urban ecosystem and its resilience to climate change, and how this can be managed using tools such as blue-green infrastructure and sustainable drainage systems.
  • Understanding renewable energy resources such as geothermal energy and energy storage.
  • Availability of mineral resources and environmental impacts of mining, covering the critical minerals needed for green technology and the industrial minerals required for construction.
  • Resilience to natural hazards including flooding, landslides, earthquakes and volcanic activity.
  • Supporting access to clean drinking water through mapping and developing groundwater resources worldwide.

BGS has a powerful brand based on more than 100 years of international collaboration. Its work supports the objectives of the UK Government and is truly global, with a track record of projects across Africa, Southeast Asia, and Latin America.
